A large majority of New Zealand homes are cold and damp, and many people are sleeping in rooms well below the World Health Organizations' safe temperature rating of 16 degrees. Moreover, cold, damp housing has been linked to the incidence of chronic respiratory diseases, among other health problems. Because of this, The Innovation Trust has launched an outreach program to warm up their community.
Studies from consumer NZ state that the second-best way to save two-thirds of your heat loss, behind good insulation, is with well-fitted and double-lined curtains. Even if your house is insulated you can lose upwards of 45% of your heat through your single glazed windows and that drops even further still to 30% in an uninsulated home.
What we Provide
The Innovation Trust accepts donated mold-free curtains, so please be aware that all our curtains are pre-loved and of good quality. If you are wanting matching curtains for your whole house, please also be aware that we may not be able to help as donations of these kinds of curtains may be limited. However, our volunteers can find curtains that may be different but fit well together or are very similar. Curtains are then provided at no charge to all those who cannot afford them.
How to Qualify
The qualifying criteria are:
Reside in Tokoroa.
Have no thermal insulated curtains in your home.
Be either a gold cardholder (pensioner) and/ or
Be a community services cardholders (low income) or
Someone in your home has respiratory complications.

How the Service works
The Curtain Bank is a free service. Once a family makes contact we will ask some questions to see if you meet the criteria. After that, we schedule an initial visit to come to your home for the first assessment. We will either hand over the curtains during that same visit or take the details away to try and source curtains to fit your windows. We do not however install the curtains and so we like to think of our curtain bank as a partnership between us and our families.
